phase 1, extra credit: What is a microagression?

This interview on the NPR: "Microaggressions Are A Big Deal: How To Talk Them Out And When To Walk Away" is an exchange between Andrew Limbong and Kevin Nadal. Kevin Nadal is a professor of psychology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. In the interview, Andrew Limbong asks Professor Nadal about Microagressions, given the current social atmosphere surrounding the death of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter Movement.

Microagressions are subtle, sometimes unintentional actions that communicate a sort or bias towards historically marginalized groups of people. Most times, people do not even realize when they are expressing microagressions. It can be anything from commenting on how well someone speaks to moving away from a black man on an elevator.

It is important to also note that microagressions are not always unintentional and ignorance cannot always be an excuse especially in this day and age. I agree with professor Nadal when he said that it is not the job of people of color to educate white people on issues. If they were true allies they would do the research themselves and watch the Manner In which they interact with these historically marginalized groups.
